CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has rejected a writ plea from Thanushkodi, who called himself a property genealogist and a social worker, for a direction to the CGMs of the State Bank of India (SBI) in Chennai and Mumbai and the assistant manager of the bank in Trichy to produce all the records and documents pertaining to the jewels mentioned in a GO dated October 5, 1948 of the then Government of Madras and other two boxes which were depos ited from 1840 onwards, verify the same and direct the governments at the State and Centre to take steps to notify the said jewels under the Antiquity Jewels and Treasuries Act and Rules of Indian States (Abolition of Privileges) Act, 1973 and to take steps to acquire them. During the course of arguments, Rema Devi, wife of Radhakrishna Thondaiman, who was the brother of Raja Rajagopal Thondaiman, was impleaded in the case. She submitted that there was a dispute between the members of the erstwhile royal family and a suit was filed before the I Additional Disaidstrict Judge in Trichy.A decree was passed by the trial court in September, 2005. An appeal was preferred and the same was pending before the Madurai Bench of the High Court.Petitioner Thanushkodi had filed an impleading petition in the appeal, claiming that he was a special power of attorney of majority of the successors of the Pudukottai royal family and that he was eligible for 10 per cent of the properties of the royal family. A person claiming 10 per cent of the properties could not be termed as a person having a public interest and this writ petition itself had been filed to grab money and properties from the royal family, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam said on Tuesday.
