Plastic manufacturers and traders have moved the Karnataka High Court against the plastic ban imposed by the state government. In a bid to curb the rising pollution, the state government had imposed a plastic ban starting March 11.
According to the order, bags above 40 microns of thickness were banned. The government, however, maintained that packaging for dairy products, export goods and sealed manufactured goods were allowed.
The move has hit several sectors, including the restaurant industry as the takeaway orders have been affected.
According to reports, more than 80,000 people work in the plastic industry in the state. Huge plastic production and the subsequent pollution has prompted the decision, but the plastic industry in Karnataka has taken a big hit as a result.
Bengaluru generates nearly 1050 tonnes of plastic garbage daily while Karnataka accounts for producing 30,000 tonnes of plastic cover annually.
