KOCHI: The office bearers of the Association of Planters of Kerala has expressed their concern over the allegations which are levelled against them. In a press release, Thomas Jacob, the chairman of the association said "There is no truth in the charges that the labourers are forced to live in pitiable conditions and have no access to proper education and health facilities."
The Association pointed out that the workers are very well organised and are always at liberty to bargain with the employees on equal terms. Their wages are being revised once in three years and the percentage of hike given during the last revision in the year 2008 was the highest in the history of the industry, the release said. The Association has never been against any reasonable increase in wages periodically. But when fresh wage negotiation is now underway, such statement as appeared in the press would only undermine the equilibrium and the cordial atmosphere prevailing in the industry.
