The state government, which is developing a biodiversity park near Gachibowli to commemorate next month's United Nation's Conference of Parties- 11 and the Convention on Biodiversity here, plans to establish one-of-its-kind freshwater aquarium of international standards.

Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who visited the 15-acre land earmarked for the biodiversity park on Wednesday, said he requested the central government to sanction about Rs 150 crore for the project.  A pylon representing all the countries in the world is being built at a cost of Rs 7crore.

Each delegate is supposed to plant a sapling of Indian plant species in the park. Earlier in the day, the chief minister visited the State Art Gallery at Madhapur which is being renovated at a cost of Rs 98 lakh.

According to tourism secretary Chandana Khan, the art gallery will have 10 halls, each one dedicated to various national and state arts and crafts, sculptures, photographs, textiles, tribal arts, modern paintings etc.

The exhibition will be open throughout the month of October whereas two exhibitions (national and state art and crafts gallery) will continue to remain open even after the conference.

At Shilparamam, one of the venues of the conference, the chief minister enquired about the progress of work on stone sculpture park and scrap welding sculptures.

Cultural events will be held at Shilparamam every evening for the international delegates apart from a handloom and handicrafts exhibition for the visitors to get a feel of the people's cultures and traditions.

Also on the menu is a food festival for the delegates to treat the guests to indigenous cuisine.

After planting a sapling there, Reddy proceeded to the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC), the main venue of the conference, and inspected the laying of approach roads by the GHMC and participated in tree plantation there too.

Briefing reporters about the chief minister's visit, GHMC commissioner MT Krishnababu expressed confidence that the corporation would be able to complete all the works by September 30 if rains did not play spoilsport just for ten days. The rains on eight of the first 11 days of September badly affected the works, he said. Ministers Vatti Vasanth Kumar, P Sabitha Indra Reddy, Sridhar Babu and others accompanied the chief minister
