KANNUR: CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has cautioned the government against using brute force to suppress the agitation organised by the SFI against the unlawful admission of a student, Nirmal Madhav, to the fifth semester BTech course at the Kozhikode Government Engineering College.Addressing a news conference here on Monday, Pinarayi condemned the police firing, use of teargas and lathicharge on agitating students in Kozhikode, and said that the police action had no justification. He demanded action against the assistant police commissioner “who fired straight at the gathering of students without any provocation”. The lathicharge on the students who blocked the main entrance to the college had no justification. The attack on SFI state secretary Biju was a planned affair. Home Guards who couldn’t be deployed for maintenance of law and order were seen beating up the agitating students along with the police, he added. The CPM state secretary said that the government should explain who authorised the assistant commissioner to fire at the students without any provocation.Pointing out that almost all the district leaders of the SFI and the DYFI were jailed by the police filing false cases with the aim of preventing them from coming out on bail, Pinarayi said that the state government cannot go ahead with this policy. The agitation will be intensified in the coming days if the government is not ready to correct its mistakes, he warned.
