A cricketer returns. A murder case gets closer to being solved. A minister is convicted of murder. A popular film actor is arrested. A bomb hoax in the country's ministerial den. And a certain class of people riot around the nation. (Phew)
The whole nation waited with their breaths held hard inside for the return of their "dada". Yes, Ganguly did return(Phew) - but under very suspicious conditions. When the team was doing miserably in good pitches, they did not recall Ganguly. When the team needed good guidance and sharp captaincy, they did not recall Ganguly. And when they saw that the team was tottering in the deadly pitches of South Africa, they decided its time they got back their man into the team. To help them not sink into the galactic world of anonymity. Some view it as a conniving move - Ganguly doesn't have a good track record in test and since the pitches are tough to bat on, he will surely fail ala others. And thus, the Ganguly chapter will be CLOSED forever. Others let out a sigh of relief - their Prince was back in Shining Armour. Well, only time will tell who is right. But for now, the nation has news to debate on while sipping down their evening tea.
Nitish Katara was love-smitten bloke, who had no idea that he was driving down the wrong lane of love. Bharti Yadav's brothers soon murdered him. His fault - being in love. Well, sitting at the edge of the 21st century, such instances can only be scoffed at. These are examples, which are completely unbelievable and are so Nancy Drew-ish. Yet, they did happen. But what was more astonishing was that the case is pending in the court for almost 4 years now. Nad no one has been yet convicted. And the cherry on the cake comes now - first, the accused has the nerve to slap a reporter and then the so-called "beloved" says that Nitish was "just a friend". If not for anything, I would request people to at least have some conscience; some heart - and not say something as foolhardy as this - such evidently colored comments will dilute people's trust in others and in the name of love and affection. (Phew)
On January 23, 1975, a certain Mr. Soren allegedly led a mob that attacked the Muslim-dominated Chirudih village in Jamtara district in a campaign to drive away "outsiders", a term used to describe non-tribals. Ten people including nine Muslims were killed in the attack. And he was charged with murder. And then in 1994, when his PA threatened to open his mouth on Shibu's bribe accepting habits, he went missing and his dead body was found almost a year later. 31 years later of the first incident and 12 years of the second, he is found guilty and is convicted. (Phew). And now he has suddenly taken ill and will not be remanded into custody for quite some days. Those days would translate into months; months into years and the story would go on. It's like déjà vu. We have seen it happen so many times to so many people - Chandraswami, Telgi, Abu Salem, Rahul Mahajan et al - when convicted, they suddenly fall ill. And the nation forgets the story.
Munnabhai is not a "Bhai" anymore. (Phew, said many). Yes, finally the court decided that Sanjay Dutt is not a terrorist - but was a naïve and a wayward boy who kept arms in a notified area without any knowledge of its repercussion or its use. His mates from the industry say that all of them feel threatened and so they have every right to keep an arm at home for self-protection. I totally agree to it but does it also mean that they can store AK-47s and AK-56s (for protection???) and that too without license? Come on, even General Musharaff's bodyguards don't need them for protection. Am sure even George Bush's men or Kofi Anan's guards don't carry them either. Unless, we are made to believe that a certain Mr. Dutt has more danger to his life than Mr. Bush or Mr. Anan. If that is the case, then can someone please clarify what is the so-called danger - a danger which seems bigger than the national harmony and religious well being; a danger that triggers a certain person in the society to keep dangerous arms at his home in the name of self protection.
The Parliament has become a diluted term now. Even a teeny-weeny, insignificant, unqualified and ill-tempered cricket coach has the nerve to joke about its inmates. Am sure this is not the dream that Gandhi, Nehru and Bose had once dreamt of. The ministers are themselves to be blamed. And that resulted in utter disrespect towards the country's diplomatic den - so much so that first, people could attack it while the session was on and then drunk teenagers could just drive in a for a night out into the Parliament area. The joke has gone a tad too far - now people can even call up police and tell them that there is a bomb in the Parliament. (Phew). Can we all, for once and for all, stand up and punish the 'person' who attacked the Parliament and treat that as an example for other mischief makers to think twice before contemplating a real attack on the Parliament, forget about cracking a joke on it??
A simple logic that existed 60 years back has been so badly convoluted and drew out that now, people have difficulty in accepting it as a concept. Now, they feel that the quota system is a sad joke played on them - and when I Say people, I mean people on either side of the system. It was built to give the SCs/STs//OBCs a head start - and then, when everyone was at par - they would pull it out. But the whole agenda was politicized and a separate caste was created - a caste, which believed in sucking more and more. And today, a day has come when a simple touch on a Dalit can pack you off into the jail for quite a few days but if a Dalit goes on rampage, burning trains and public properties, the law has to stand and watch. My heart goes out for everyone - Dalit and non-Dalit - I feel that its high time we remove all barriers amongst us - so much so that at least when two gangs fight the next time, they should not say that one caste is fighting the other caste. Folks, please wake up from your trance and see how much the world has changed. India and its citizens would lose out in the fight of survival if we keep bickering like this amongst us. (Phew)
With so much happening, I wonder what else can happen now. How bizarre can incidents be now?
How about Rakhi Sawant quitting dancing? Or maybe, Greg Chappel confessing that he is a mole planted by the Australian Cricket Board? Or maybe, Govinda hosting KBC4? Or maybe, Bengalis going on a hunger strike when Saurav's flight gets delayed and he misses the first test??
Phew - a lot can happen here. Let us just wait and watch what happens next.

Nowhere in this world can so many things happen in two days.
