Jodhpur: The Thar Express connecting India and Pakistan was revived early this year after a gap of 40 years.
Pakistan's decision to limit the number of passengers on the train to 400 led to a huge uproar. At the Jodhpur railway station 300 Pakistani passengers are protesting against their own government's decision.
For the passengers from Pakistan, who landed at the Jodhpur railway station, Friday night was a nightmare
As the number of passengers on the Thar Express was limited to 400, about 300 passengers whose visas were expiring could not get tickets to return.
While some feared legal action by Indian authorities for overstaying others had personal emergencies to attend to.
For the last two weeks Pakistan restricted the number of passengers to 400 while the number of passengers from India was over 400.
India, too, decided to stick to sending 400 passengers on Friday night leading to the chaos though later the government made an exception.
“We attached an extra coach and allowed all the passengers to go but now the talks are on and a restriction of 400 passengers been imposed and maybe we'll discover a formula where we'll decide how many of these will be Indians and how many will be Pakistanis,” Senior Deputy General Manager and Spokesperson, North Western Railways, Jaipur, SB Gandhi says.
With infrastructure constraints on either sides of the border the number of the passengers will now be limited to 400 for the train that runs once a week leaving many to wait for their turn much longer.
