HYDERABAD: Twelve-year-old B Tarun aka Chinna, 13-year-old Sheikh Ghouse and 15-year-old A Vijayabhasker used to fill water in the water board’s tankers and also clean vehicles until a few days ago when officials from the labour department raided the place to rescue the child labourers. Though they claim to have been working for less than two weeks, cases were booked against the contractors and were imposed a penalty under the Minimum Wages Act. They were among the 35-odd children rescued by the labour department during their drive against child labour in the last couple of months. The employers of these children though were charged under different cases, were also directed to deposit the difference of minimum wages that are liable to be paid by them to the child labour for the period of work with the employers. “Constant inspections were undertaken in the four major roads of Secunderabad during the past two months and about 35 children were detected and they were shifted to rehabilitation centres and cases filed against the employers under Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation ) Act,” said MN Varahala Reddy, joint commissioner of labour. An open court was organised by the labour department on Saturday where cases of difference of minimum wages were disposed off by the assistant commissioners of labour. About Rs 1,28,596 was collected from employers and deposited as fixed deposits, said S Naresh Kumar, deputy commissioner.
