CHENNAI: Part of an 80-year-old building located on Bharathi Salai, Triplicane collapsed on Saturday night injuring one person. Police said the part which housed four shops and a residence, could have collapsed because of the incessant rains.Police said that Marimuthu and Prabhakaran, employed at Marina Fancy store, owned by Pattammal, on hearing a banging noise on the roof of their shop around 9.30 pm, immediately ran out. The first floor of the two-storey building collapsed and police said the damage could amount to lakhs of rupees. Prabhakaran (20) suffered minor injuries. Firefighters from Egmore, Triplicane and Kilpauk, and an emergency rescue tender from Egmore fire station were pressed into service.The building, constructed in 1931, is owned by Rajasekhar of Anna Nagar. Apart from the fancy store, the building housed Venus Shoppee and Kids Store, owned by Yasin Mohammad of Royapettah, Victoria Tea Stall owned by Murali and Chandrika photo studio. Four occupants of the house were rescued by fire personnel. Yusuf of the kids store got minor injuries. “Part of the building had already collapsed. Occupants knew it would collapse any time,” said a police official. Police said the building was allegedly involved in a civil dispute.
