Shimla: One person was killed and six other members of two families were feared washed away when the car in which they were travelling collided with another vehicle and plunged into swollen Beas river in Mandi district.
The deceased has been identified as Banita (24), a resident of village Saroa in Mandi district, police said.
The missing persons have been identified as Meera Devi (38), her children Tilak Raj (14) and Chetna Devi (23), residents of Gaunce village, her son-in-law Monu from Pathankot and two-month-old granddaughter, and Divya (6).
Chuni Lal (18) was rescued from the spot, they said.
The eight occupants, hailing from Pandoh in Mandi, were returning in the car from the famous Sikh shrine at Manikaran when the mishap occurred on Sunday night near Aut on Kiratpur-Manali National highway, about 80 kms from Shimla.
A body was recovered from Larji Dam, police said, adding the lone survivor has been admitted to a hospital at Mandi.
"Search operation was hampered due to darkness on Sunday night. It has resumed and efforts are being made to locate the others but chances of finding any survivor are very remote," a police officer, engaged in the operation, said.
Local people and divers are assisting in the search operation. The chances of the victims being swept away into Larji Dam are quite high, he added.
