She was set on fire on Sunday night in her school hostel in Odisha's Raigada districts's Tikri primary school and had sustained 90 per cent burn injuries. She was shifted to a Vishakapatanam hospital the next morning and after battling for life for almost five days she died.
What is alarming is that the victim had lodged the sexual harassment complaint in Tikri police station against the school inspector - Netrananda Dandasena more than three months back but no action was taken. She even approached the district collector but that too yielded no result. Just a day after she was set on fire by a youth in the hostel, the assitant sub inspector, the District school inspector have been placed under suspension and three days later the prime accused the school inspector- Dandasena was arrested.
However, the youth who set her on fire allegedly under instruction from the school inspector is still absconding.
The incident has highlighted how no lessons have been learnt yet in such crime against women. The Odisha Police which is also to be blamed in this incident has failed to set up a woman and child desk in all police stations across the state even though the state government had announced this decision eight years ago and despite Odisha High Court's order for such establishing such desks immediately, no action was taken.
After this incident when there is lot of protest in the media and by the opposition, Chief Minister Navin Patnaik has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of the deceased and ordered that the case be heard in a fast track court.
