The Pakistan captain, Babar Azam lamented the mistakes the side made against rivals India and fellow group members, the USA during the T20 World Cup 2024 matches as the side called time to their campaign after they beat Ireland by three wickets at the Central Broward Regional Park, Lauderhill, Florida on Monday.
The skipper played the anchor with 32 runs to help Pakistan chase down 107 in what was a turbulent run-chase which almost saw the former World Champions give away the game.
“I think with the bowling, conditions suited our bowlers. But in batting, we made a few mistakes in the matches against the USA and India. When you lose wickets, the pressure is on you,” said Babar in the post-match presentation ceremony.
“We couldn’t finish off close games, and as a team, we weren’t good,” he admitted.

The 2009 T20 World Champions suffered defeats in their first two games against India and the USA following which they beat Canada and Ireland. The skipper was pleased as they brought an end to their tournament on a positive.
“Yes, we finished well. We took early wickets with the ball. But with the bat, we didn’t finish well. We lost back-to-back wickets, but got over the line in the end.”
With his future as a captain being uncertain following back-to-back disasters in the ODI and T20 World Cups, Babar maintains that the national side has a good bunch of players and they will regroup and work on their shortcomings.
“Let’s see, what the team needs, I’ll be okay with it. We have a good bunch of players, we’ve to go home, chat and see where we lacked, and then come back,” he added.

Pakistan will have to work on a lot of aspects, especially their batting. While the bowling unit has been able to string in performances, particularly against India, it is the batting unit that has let the side down in various instances during this tournament.
The PCB will have a lot to think and plan regarding the future of Pakistan Cricket is to go back to the top soon. Their next assignment will be a three-match ODI series against Australia that is slated to take place in November, later this year.
