India would make no commitments on reducing emissions at the expense of growth.

New Delhi: It's been a week since the Climate change talks kicked off at Bali. However, with high-level ministerial discussions coming up, India's stand is clear that it would make no commitments on reducing emissions at the expense of growth.

Although, the pressure on developing nations is already mounting, the developed nations like the US, Japan and even Australia which just signed into Kyoto, are pushing for the existing global treaty to be trashed for a new one. This is being seen more as a move to get countries like India and China to make binding commitments to cut green house gases or atleast put a break on rising emissions as part of the new pact.

However, the move to get India to approve the binding agreement is something the top Indian delegates to Bali including Kapil Sibal, hope to stringently oppose.

“Developing nations like Brazil, India and Pakistan are also opposing the US and EU's latest proposal to remove trade barriers, to allow for clean-energy technology transfers,” says Kapil Sibal, Union Minister Science and Technology.

The ministerial talks at Bali begin on December 12th and India wants to stick to its stand that it will not accept any conditions that could interfere with its economic growth. However, delegates do plan to highlight measures that the country will take to mitigate climate change internally.
