GUNTUR: The APSRTC is not ready to introduce city bus services in Guntur now as the proposal sent by the officials of the region has been rejected by the management.People of Guntur city have been demanding introduction of RTC bus services for the past six years. There is a need for introduction of RTC city bus services in Guntur with a population of 8.5 lakh. The floating population of the city, which spreads over 46 km in area, is two lakh.At present, 120 private city buses are being operated covering 28 km. The city buses carry about 30,000 commuters a day. Guntur - Peddakakani, Mangalagiri, Chebrolu, Amaravati and Sattenapalli are busy routes. As per norms, the municipal corporation should adopt a resolution for nationalisation of city bus services. The Road Transport Authority should also approve the proposal. In the absence of any resolution in this regard, private bus services are still being operated in the city.Though many of the city buses run by private operators are in a bad shape, no action has been initiated against them by the RTA. Another allegation by city bus commuters is rude behaviour of the crew. The number of autorickshaws in the city has increased to 15,000 and the RTA has stopped registration of new autos.Hence, there is a need to nationalise city bus services in Guntur, say commuters.
