HYDERABAD: A day after violent clashes between students and the police, normalcy returned to the Nizam College hostel and the Osmania University campus on Tuesday. Though the OU students tried to march to the Nizam College, the police, who were deployed in good numbers, prevented them from doing so. Students and pro-Telangana activists, however, sought action against Central Zone DCP Akun Sabharwal for caning students at the Nizam College hostel on Monday. The Telangana advocates' joint action committee urged the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to look into the alleged police excesses. At the Nizam College, though the atmosphere was by and large peaceful, the students vented their ire on principal Naidu Ashok and demanded his resignation. "The principal was on the campus but did not stop the policemen when the latter used teargas shells and barged into the hostel to thrash the students," M Linga Swamy, a final-year MA student alleged. The students had tried to take out a rally from the college to the Secretariat on Monday forcing the cops to whip out their lathis. The students further alleged that the police had arrested 29 students and got their judicial custody. "Four students were beaten badly. They are undergoing treatment at the Osmania General Hospital," Linga Swamy said adding that the principal ought to lodge a complaint against the policemen with the SHRC and secure bail for the arrested students. When contacted, Naidu Ashok told City Express that about 200 college students had violated prohibitory orders imposed under Section 144 of the IPC and damaged 50 vehicles, including four cars and a police van. “They had also pelted stones at policemen and injured them. Then the policemen barged into the hostel and caught the students involved in that incident. Some of the students were caned because they resisted the police. Many of the students were released on Monday evening itself. Only 29 have been sent to jail," he explained. He said, “I was not aware of this incident as I was in the college at the time. When I was informed about it, I rushed to the police station and met the students who were hospitalised. I spent my own money for their treatment. This morning, when I went to express my sympathies to the students, I was abused and asked to resign. At the hostel, I told them I would resign but I didn't as I was not the culprit.” TRS leaders KT Rama Rao, E Rajendar and Telangana political JAC convenor Prof Kodandaram later met the students.
