In a shocking incident, a new born baby boy, presumably born out of an illegitimate relationship, was packed in a sack and dumped into a 40-feet dry well at a private farm near Kalapatty in Coimbatore on Sunday. However the baby miraculously survived and is convalescing at the state-run Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

According to police, a retired engineer, Govindan of Ashok Nagar near Kalapatty, had gone to his farm for his routine morning walk around 8. a.m. when he heard the cries of a baby. Taken aback, he peeped into the dry well and found a sack inside.

Sensing something amiss, he called for help. One of his neighbours, Gopi, climbed down the well and retrieved the sack even as a crowd gathered at the spot. When they opened the sack, people were shocked to find inside a new-born baby, with its umbilical cord still in place. The baby had sustained minor bruises on its body, leading to doubts that the person who dumped him might have climbed down the well and placed the infant there.

The residents immediately called for an ambulance and rushed the infant to the hospital. “The baby is being treated at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). When the infant was admitted in the morning, he had visible difficulty in breathing. But now he is normal and responding to the treatment,” CMCH Resident Medical Officer Dr P Sivaprakasam told Express.

Doctors are feeding glucose and infant milk powder to the baby. “We will keep the baby under observation at the NICU ward for a week and hand him over to a government home for children,” he added.

According to Sivaprakasam, the hospital has received abandoned newborns in the past too. However this was the first time a baby rescued from a well was brought.
