CHENNAI: The New Year bash has left the city high on waste and garbage, posing a severe challenge to the city corporation at the very beginning of another year. The revelry that took place all over the city, especially in public places such as  the beaches, parks and places of worship, have left heaps of garbage in various spots of the city, making them look like mini-dumpyards.The road opposite the Besant Nagar Church has taken the worst beating with piles of plastic bags containing rotting eatables. The showers on early Sunday morning made matters worse for the shopkeepers and church goers with waste leaking out all over the roads and raising a strong, unbearable stench. The scene was no better along the stretch of Elliot’s Beach. Plastic cups, broken bottles, ice-cream wrappers and plastics dotted the beach. The conservancy workers of Corporation, however, swung into action on the New Year morning and cleaned up the entire Elliot’s Beach stretch. “Though it is the duty of the Corporation to clean up the mess, it is the duty of every citizen to ensure that he or she doesn’t ruin their surroundings by littering in the first place,” said Ram Mohan, a walker at Elliot’s Beach. “The place is so messed up that most of us who came walking today have returned, not wanting  to parade across this mess,” he added. The Marina wasn’t spared either. The stretch between the Gandhi Statue and Light House was a cesspool on Sunday morning with waste floating in the stagnating rain water. The Corporation conservancy workers had not taken cognisance of the filth in this area till late Sunday afternoon, much to the dismay of beach goers and traffic police who were stationed in that area.“Despite all the clean-up efforts on Marina by both concerned citizens and corporation, the state of affairs is back to square one, thanks to a few irresponsible citizens,” fumes Meera Janardhanan, who frequents the Marina Beach.
