CHENNAI: Preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for 117 municipalities at an estimated cost of Rs 7,100 crore and 3 DPRs for 3 corporations (Tiruchy, Coimbatore and Tuticorin) at a cost of Rs 1,570 crore is complete and new technology is being explored for the construction of Underground Sewerage (UGSS) network to avoid inconvenience to the public, Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development KP Munusamy told the Assembly on Monday.Tabling the Policy note (2012-13) for his departments, he said conventional installation of open trench caused significant disruption of services. “It has hence been proposed to explore new technologies like trenchless technology, pre-fabricated inspection chambers and innovative piping materials in UGS Schemes,” he noted.He said the UGSS is already complete in Ooty, Chinnamanur and Pallavapuram municipalities at a cost of Rs 95.57 crore.Also, the government proposed to implement a ‘Waste to energy’ project in the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode in Tirunelveli Corporation. All the urban local bodies will practice source segregation of solid waste into degradable and non-degradable components in a phased manner.
