BANGALORE: Here is a new ray of hope for the renal patients suffering from HIV. Two HIV positive Africans suffering from renal problems have got a new lease of life after undergoing kidney transplantation at a private hospital in the city. While most of the HIV infected people are denied treatment in the hospitals across the country, Narayana Hrudayalaya carried out the surgeries on these two patients - Mohamed Sayeed, 35-year-old nurse by profession from East Africa and 29-year-old Ojus Paul, a military officer with Africa (both names changed).Announcing this at a press conference on Thursday, Dr Llyod Vincent, senior consultant nephrologist and clinical director of the Dialysis services at the Narayana Hrudayalaya said, “Compared to dialysis, transplantation is the best way ahead for the HIV patients. There is a bit of hindrance shown by the HIV patients to take up transplantation as they are not aware of the advantages of it.” He said that the awareness is very low in India when compared to other nations like Africa.Llyod also pointed out that the mortality on dialysis was approximately 50 per cent at two years, while the patient survival after the transplantation was about 90 per cent.Stating that only two such transplants have been done earlier in India, in Delhi and Tamil Nadu, Dr Isthiaque Ahmed, who was one of the team doctors who carried out the transplantation said, “People are still not aware that even Bangalore has the expertise and technology to carry out kidney transplantation. While the incidence of transplantation in HIV patients are on a high in well established health centres over the world, they are very less in our country.”Ojus Paul, a military officer in Africa said that he was discouraged for the transplantation in Egypt and reached Narayana Hrudayalaya only after he got a positive reply from the hospital saying that the hospital was ready to carry out transplantation. He said that he was thrilled with the transplantation and said that he was planning to get back to work after taking rest for over a month’s time. The kidney transplanted to Mohamed Sayeed was donated by his wife. Ojus Paul, another patient received the kidney from his mother.
