BANGALORE: India is the eleventh most affected country by cyber crimes and with an aim to address some of the issues related to hacking and cyber warfare, the Computer Society of India (CSI) held the seven national conference on ‘IT in Defence’ and discussed the latest trends in the field.Speaking on the occasion, Rear Admiral Rahul Sharawat, Director General, Weapons Electronics and Systems Engineering Establishment, said that India lost nearly Rs 34,110 crore as a result of cyber crimes and there were 29.9 million victims last year (2010-2011).The Rear Admiral who delivered a talk on cyber security highlighted the vulnerability of cyber attacks would increase, as the sellers of the technology would be infested with virtual bugs and other trapdoors. He added that the Indian cyber security lacked a proper legal frame work, human resource and testing facilities among others.Calling for a need to check these shortcomings, he called for developing internal expertise in the filed. He said that this effort must involve training the personnel in the field and also encourage academia to come forward to build the infrastructure. He stated that there were many instances in which Indian cyber security experts have not been allowed to attend conferences in other places and also cases in which the transfer of technology and knowledge have been denied. The other speakers asserted that network centric operations have been evolved to address such challenges as the modern defence is moving several levels up from C4i to C5iSR, an integral mechanism to wage effective war. The CSI stated that the major IT challenge was how to integrate and assimilate data across heterogeneous systems in the country to provide faster decision support to the defence decision makers.
