New Delhi: The nation payed homage to the Father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi on his 140th birth anniversary on October 2, observed as Gandhi Jayanti.
A delegation of political leaders led by Vice-President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, including Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit paid tributes to Bapu, who led India to freedom through his ideal of non-violence from the British, at Rajghat in New Delhi.
Mahatma's favourite bhajan Vaishnav Jan resounded the ambiance on the occasion.
Leader of Opposition L K Advani were among the prominent persons who offered floral tributes at Rajghat.
Several dignitories and his ardent desciples were also present at the function to pay their tributes to Gandhiji.
The leaders also paid their tributes to former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at his memorial Vijay Ghat on his 105th birth anniversary.
Various religious groups also offered prayers at the samadhi.
