KOZHIKODE: In a unique initiative to brainstorm the issue of ‘Rural Agriculture Credit Reach in India’, an event-’Rural Nirman’, would be conducted under the aegis of Nabard at the Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode. The programme will be held in connection with the ‘Backwaters Fest’, which will kick-start on November 17. The students of IIMK have drawn out the plan for the event ‘Rural Nirman’. Eight teams were shortlisted from the 60 teams that had registered for the event on Wednesday. Six teams that have been shortlisted are from IIMK and the other two teams are from the Loyola Institute of Business Administration and the Indian Institute of Fashion Technology. These teams will present their proposals on the IIMK campus on November 18. The proposals will be judged by senior officials from Nabard and the faculty of Economics and Public Policy. The presentation will also require the students to give suggestions for the effective use of credit in rural areas. The three-member teams were shortlisted after reviewing the power point presentations about the possible innovation and reformation that can be brought to the present credit system in rural agriculture. The scrutini was done by an expert panel. The presentations were based on the facts and case studies on the agriculture sector in India. The Nabard authorities said that they were looking for innovative ideas to improve the productivity from agriculture credit. “Though Nabard has an efficient outreach in states such as Kerala, it has not yet fully tapped the productivity from the credit. It is in this context that we would like to bring in new ideas from the student community,” said Nagesh Kumar, Assistant General Manager of Nabard in Kozhikode. The official also confirmed that if worthy ideas do come up in the presentation, Nabard would try and implement the system in future. The event offers a cash award of Rs 30,000 for the best presentation. “The event was decided to be hosted in accordance with the theme of the Backwaters Fest- ‘People, Planet, Profit’. The subject is also relevant in the light of the rising farmer suicides,” said Varun Murali, one of the coordinators of the event.
