Bangalore: Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar, scion of the erstwhile Mysore royal family, died of a massive cardiac arrest at a private hospital on Tuesday.
Wodeyar (60) was brought in a "non-responsive" state and attempts to resuscitate him did not succeed, sources at Vikram Hospital, where he was rushed, said.
Wodeyar represented Mysore in the Lok Sabha four times between 1984 and 2004. Wodeyar was the only son of the last king of Mysore Jaya Chamaraja Wodeyar, who abdicated the throne after independence.
Wodeyar was a university level Cricket player and was interested in fashion designing and had introduced Mysore Royal Silks Brand. With the death of Wodeyar, the 600 years old Mysore Royal dynasty (Yadu dynasty) will come to an end.
Wodeyar was living at the world famous Amba Vilas palace in Mysore with his wife Queen Rani Pramoda Devi Wodeyar. His father and the last king of Mysore Jaya Chamaraja Wodeyar died in 1974. Mysore Royal family was the third most important royal family in India during the British rule. It was the third largest kingdom of British India. The people of Karnataka (earlier known as Mysore state) worshipped the Wodeyars, who did a lot for the welfare of common people during their reign. The kings of Mysore are revered. Even Mahatma Gandhi had described them as a role model for other kings in India.
On hearing the news of the death of Wodeyar, the city of Mysore has plunged into mourning.
