Muslims weave the thread of love

About 200 Muslim artisans of the district have been busy weaving the colourful threads and giving final touches to the rakhis for the Raksha Bandhan festival on August 2.

A tradition in Dobandha, Chaudakulata, Charinangal and Ranapada villages of the district, the festival continues to present a picture of communal harmony while providing many Muslim families with a livelihood option.

“We have inherited it from our forefathers,” said Ali, an artisan, surrounded by heaps of cardboard, paint boxes, silver papers and other rakhi-making material.

The employment scope, however, is limited with sale being seasonal. “We also make kites for Makar Sankranti, paper boats during Kartika Purnima and sundry items like paper dolls all through the year. Barring Raksha Bandhan and Makar Sankranti, the returns are low,” said Shabir Khan (42), an artisan of Dobandha village.
