Mumbai's Sion Bridge To Be Shut For Traffic For 2 Years: Check Road Diversions, Routes To Avoid
Mumbai’s century-old Sion bridge to be demolished and rebuilt from August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2026. Check Mumbai Traffic Police's advisory before you plan your travel

As the Central Railway demolishes and rebuilds Mumbai’s iconic Sion road overbridge (ROB), motorists will have to face major traffic diversions for the next two years.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, in its structural audit, had recommended the dismantling of the 112-year old British-era structure. The bridge was also in the way of the fifth and sixth railway lines being planned between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla. The CR, along with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), will now build the new bridge.

The bridge served as a crucial link between Dharavi, Bandra, Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg and the Eastern Express Highway (EEH).

With the work planned from August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2026, the Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) has redirected vehicles to either side of the existing Sion ROB, towards Sion Hospital side and the Kurla end of Sion station.

The MTP’s post on X read: “The Sion overbridge connecting Sion East & West will be demolished & reconstructed by @Central_Railway Due to this, vehicular traffic from the Matunga traffic division & Dr. B.A. Road heading westbound via the Sion overbridge towards L.B.S. Road or Sant Rohidas Road, also traffic from the Kurla traffic division on L.B.S. Road or Sant Rohidas Road heading eastbound via the Sion overbridge towards Dr. B.A. Road, will be diverted. Diversion will be in effect from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2026 as per the issued traffic management order.”
