BANGALORE: The Rickshaw Challenge Mumbai Xpress that follows an extensive route through the four states of India — Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra, reached Bangalore on Wednesday. The 2,000 kilometre Rickshaw Challenge Mumbai Xpress 2011, an adventure rally consisting of 14 autorickshaws with 31 international rickshaw racers began in Mumbai on July 30 and will reach Chennai on August 12. The adventurers come from countries as far as UK, Chile, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and, Canada looking for an experience of a lifetime. The Bangalore Leg flag off is scheduled on Thursday morning from the Round Table School, Roopena Agrahara, off Hosur Road. The auto rickshaws left Mumbai on July 30 and travelled to Alibag, Pune, Mahabaleshwar, Ratnagiri, Panaji, Murudeswar (Bhatkal), Mangalore, Mysore and arrived in Bangalore on Wednesday. From here they will make their way to Vellore and thereafter end in Chennai, covering a distance of 2,000 kilometers.Through this tour they are also hoping to raise funds for the underprivileged for various projects of Round Table India’s initiative ‘Freedom through Education’. This year they are striving to reduce their carbon footprint and following environment friendly practices while on the move. The Rickshaw Challenge was started by Chennai Event Management Services in 2006 with a route from Chennai to Kanniyakumari. Today, they have about one event every month throughout the year. This time, the challenge is even greater as there are no officially supplied maps or equipment to help navigate the journey. The stakes are also higher — the grand prize is a free entry for two participants into the Caucasian Challenge, a 6,000 km race across 11 countries in Europe. In order to win the Rickshaw Challenge Mumbai Xpress 2011, the participants will have to rely on the locals at each destination to guide them along. During the Rickshaw Challenge participants will eagerly look forward to a number of mini races and challenges on a daily basis.
