New Delhi: Security for General Secretary of the NSCN-IM Thuingaleng Muivah, currently in the Capital, has been beefed up following reports of a threat to his life from a rival rebel group, official sources said on Friday.
The step was taken in the wake of media reports from Nagaland that said the Khaplang faction of NSCN had issued a "death threat" to Muivah, the sources said.
Muivah arrived in Delhi on Wednesday to take forward the stalled peace process in Nagaland. He is expected to meet senior Indian leaders and also visit Nagaland.
The sources said security has been tightened around the government bungalow in central Delhi where Muivah is staying with his entourage as the reported threat to his life came in the wake of violent clashes between the two factions of the NSCN in Nagaland.
"These clashes have claimed many lives and we don't want to take any chances. Any untoward incident could have a major impact on the Naga peace process," a source told PTI.
Dozens of members of both NSCN factions have died in clashes in the past few months.
Soon after NSCN-IM leaders said Muivah would visit Nagaland after Christmas, the Khaplang faction said in a statement it would not permit him to "stay" in the state. It said it would mobilise over 200 cadres in Dimapur, a known NSCN-IM stronghold.
Official sources said special security arrangements would be made when Muivah visits Nagaland.
