Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Sunday said he has tested positive for coronavirus and has been hospitalised.
"Following fever, I got myself tested and found to be infected by coronavirus," Sriramulu tweeted on Sunday. He has been admitted to the Government Bowring hospital in the city for treatment. The Minister said he is praying to God to heal him soon so that he can get back to public work at the earliest. Sriramulu is the fifth minister in Karnataka to have tested positive for coronavirus. Prior to him, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, Forest Minister Anand Singh, Tourism Minister C T Ravi, B C Patilwere found infected by the virus.
Besides him, leader of opposition Siddaramaiah too tested Covid-19 positive. Yediyurappa and Siddaramaiah are undergoing treatment ina private hospital, where their condition is said to be stable.
With 5,985 new Covid-19 cases and 107 casualties, the number of those infected by the deadly virus in Karnataka reached 1.78 lakh on Sunday. According to the health bulletin issued by Karnataka, 5,670 discharges on Sunday took the total discharges to 93,908 whereas there were 80,973 active cases including 678 in the ICU. In Madhya Pradesh, medical education minister Vishwas Sarang has been tested coronavirus positive and admitted to Chirayu Covid Hospital in Bhopal.
Meanwhile, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams officials said that their 743 employees have tested positive for Covid-19 till Sunday. The Tirumala Venkateswara temple, which was closed for pilgrims since 20 March due to the pandemic, was reopened on June 11 for darshan.
On Sunday, the total number of coronavirus cases in India stood at 21,53,011 after the country registered a single-day spike of 64,399 cases.
