KOCHI: The National Highway State Action Council has welcomed the state government's decision to explore the possibilities to construct elevated highways on all national highways (NHs) in the state.
PWD Minister V K Ibrahimkunju had declared in the Assembly that the proposal to create elevated highways on NHs was being considered. The council had been raising the issue for quite some time, said Hashim Chennampilly, general convener, Joint Council Against NH Widening. No eviction will be needed to implement the project. Besides, the chances of road accidents will be less. The closure of village roads and levying toll from the locals under BOT can be avoided. The potential of monorail should be tapped. It will help reduce traffic snarls considerably. "The state government can use the huge amounts required for land acquisition for NH widening to build elevated highways.

Such a system will prevent traffic problems and will help avoid the problem of evacuation and forced land acquisition. A feasibility study should be conducted and a detailed project report (DPR) should be prepared.

C G Varghese, Hashim Chennampilly, S Prakash Menon, E V Muhammed Ali and T K Sudheerkumar, A Nasar and M Surendran Pillai spoke at the meet. ENS
