KOCHI: Cashing in on the heavy downpour across the state for the past couple of weeks, the Kerala State Electricity Board is on a power generation spree.   With the storage level at Idukki reservoir reaching 87.73 per cent on Tuesday, power generation has reached 7.775 Mega Unit - the highest-ever in the past couple of months. The board is planning to operate two more generators by the end of this month. The water level in all major dams in Idukki has risen with the reservoir registering 2392.38 ft. The rainfall at Idukki was 17.4 mm on Tuesday. “The storage level and power generation from Idukki are high compared to the same last year. On Tuesday, we could generate 7.775 MU from Idukki while power generated from here on the same day last year was 1.98 MU only. Similarly, the storage capacity was 87.727 per cent on Tuesday while during the same period last year, it was only 65.248 per cent,” KSEB sources said. The shutters would be opened only if the water level reaches the maximum of 2,403 ft, they said.“We have decided to continue with power generation using the four generators. Against the normal consumption of 48 MU, we have been successful in generating 26-27 MU these days. Power generation will continue at this rate. We will soon have two more generators operating from the last week of September,” KSEB spokesperson said. The water level at other mini-dams in the district are: Kallarkutty (466.40 m), Shenkulam (847.05 m), Ponmudi (707.60 m), Anayirankal (1201.41 m), Mattupetti (1597.20 m) and Kundala (1758.70 m). Shutters of Kundala and Kallarkutty dams have already been opened. If the water level exceeds two more metres, shutters would be opened at Mattupetti, sources said.
