Understanding of godIt doesn’t mean if one frequents the temple, he is spiritual. I won’t visit the temple daily but I make sure I pray to god before my concerts. I believe in god, he helps me to do things with a good beginning that has equally a good ending.Spiritual beliefsI carry a rosary in my hand bag and a photo of Jesus Christ. God’s grace is infinite and boundless. He is eternal. Also, I love visiting Buddhist temples. My mother always complains that I never chant slokas. She is sentimental and orthodox. She forces me to wear specific colours as per the day’s significance, but I have hardly listened to her. Spiritual practicesI go according to the advice of my spiritual guru, Lakshmi Narasimhan. He has an ancient Chakarathazhvar vigraham (idol) at his home. I frequent his place before my concerts. He’s a soothsayer. I’m sure if I don’t listen to him, things will turn sour for me. Whatever he says, I follow it with belief and faith. For instance, once I had a sore throat and I was in dilemma if I would be able to sing or not, but fortunately that concert went well and my throat went back to normal.Spiritual experienceMy favourite god is Guruvayurappan. I like him because of his charm. Whenever I visit Tirupathi, I’m in tears. It gives me positive vibes and peace. When I render a ragamalika or sing praises of the lord, I receive his blessings.Meditation and awakeningMy husband (Dr Sreekumar) is in to pranic healing and other breathing techniques. I believe in what he does. I too like meditation and will start practising soon!(Mahathi is a playback singer and classical musician)
