PURI: A minor girl was raped and murdered in village Sahanikera here on Saturday.Ranjana Swain of the village under the Brahmagiri police limits lodged a complaint with the police on Sunday that Rasmiranjan Jena, a youth of the same village, had called her daughter to his house where he committed the crime. He later doused her in kerosene and set her afire before fleeing. Hearing the little girl’s scream for help, locals rushed to the spot and took her to the district headquarters hospital where she succumbed. Sources said she had sustained 70 per cent burn injuries. Brahmagiri police have registered a case of rape and murder. SP Anup Sahu said efforts were on to nab the accused.Judicial Commission visits PipiliJustice P K Mohanty Commission of Inquiry, probing the Pipili rape case, on Sunday made an on-the-spot inquiry after over five months of the incident.Accompanied by investigating officers of the Crime Branch and local police, Justice Mohanty visited Arjundaga village under Pipili police limits.“We wanted to see the spot where the girl was allegedly raped and a bid was made to kill her,” Justice Mohanty told mediapersons. Justice Mohanty also said that the visit would help him establish facts after recording statements of various persons. “Circumstantial evidence may help the Commission to come to a conclusion,” he said. The 19-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped and attempts were made to murder her at the paddy field outside Arjungada village on November 29, 2011. Student ‘Drowns’A school student drowned while bathing in the sea in Puri on Sunday.Sunil Sethy, a Class XII student of Xaviers High School in Cuttack, had come to Puri along with two of his friends. They were bathing when Sunil was dragged into the sea by a huge tidal wave. His body is yet to be traced. Police have registered a case.
