CHENNAI: Even as Indian cities are all set to bustle with a slew of Metro rail projects, an international safety expert has stressed the need for local expertise in tunnelling works for the new rail based rapid transport system.“India must nurture tunnelling engineers and workers,” Martyn Gomersall, Chief Safety Expert, EMBYE - General Consultant, Chennai Metro Rail Limited, said on the sidelines of an event here on Sunday. Pointing out that the companies engaged in building Metro rail in the country are sourcing expertise from aboard, he said, India should cash in on the opportunity to produce its personnel for the purpose.“There is a shortage of tunnelling engineers and workers in the country, forcing companies to import tunnelling experts. In fact, I had recruited two Indians, who were working in the field of tunnelling at the United Arab Emirates for the ongoing Chennai Metro Rail in the city,” he added. Asked why such a specific manpower is required, he underscored that the local people would understand the prevailing culture better than anyone from outside.Earlier, addressing a group of safety engineers, he said the field of safety in construction of tunnels is challenging with several factors should be taken into consideration before venturing into the process. In his address, K Rajaraman, Managing Director, Chennai Metro Rail said, inclusion of safety aspect in engineering curriculum would be taken up with the concerned authorities.“We will write to Anna University in this regard,” he added.
