BHUBANESWAR: The weatherman has good news for coastal Odisha and a bad one for western plate. The prevailing heatwave conditions may relent, marginally though, over coastal districts where conditions are favourable for the temperature to drop in the next few days till June 1.However, heatwave conditions will prevail in western districts where the mercury will continue to go beyond 45 degree Celsius for at least a week. Weather would be mainly dry.According to Prof. S Pasupalak, head of Agricultural Meteorology Department of Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, the hot westerly wind from north-west blowing through Madhya Pradesh to Odisha and then over to Bay of Bengal will continue, but may remain limited to western districts.During this period, troughs may be formed over Odisha and adjoining states, causing sea wind from the Bay of Bengal to flow into the coastal areas, leading to partial cloudy conditions. Mercury is expected to drop in coastal Odisha for the next four days. However, there is a possibility of it rising in Bhubaneswar in June first week. The department’s weekly report said the trans-equatorial wind is normal in its direction and its flow over Bay of Bengal is normal and the progress is likely to remain normal too. While heavy rainfall is taking place over Andamans and the same is expected over the North-East, wind direction is not normal over the central and north Arabian sea which is why the pressure is not favourable for progress of south-west wind. The outcome will be that onset of monsoon over Kerala may get delayed by at least four days unless a low pressure is formed over land or sea.During this period, nor’wester may occur in the interior areas of the State while coastal Odisha, including Bhubaneswar, is likely to get some rainfall in the first four days of June.
