Cows’ natural diet consists mainly of grasses, legumes, alfalfa, clover, and hay. They are grazing animals, after all. In rural regions of our country, it is a usual sight to see cows grazing in the pastures. But Suprabha, a cow raised in Rabindran’s house at Kannukkara Challa in Vadakara municipality in Kerala, is different from ordinary cows. You will never come across her grazing in the fields or eating hay out of a bucket. Suprabha is very choosy about her food. This 37-year-old cow does not eat grass, preferring sweets, fruits and vegetables instead.
The cow did not always have this customised diet, She used to be found grazing on Rabindran’s piece of land till two years back but after delivering her last calf two years back, she simply would not eat grass anymore. Halwa is the favourite food of this unusual cow. Although the average lifespan of cows is only 21-22 years, Suprabha still lives a healthy life. Rabindran’s mother was gifted two-year-old Suprabha by her brother Mandodi Kumaran 35 years ago.
Suprabha grew up with six other cows in the cow shed and has given birth to 15 calves over the years. She used to produce up to 7 litres of milk daily, but her behaviour changed significantly after her last calving. Suprabha stopped eating her usual diet of grass and fodder and, despite receiving medical injections, she did not conceive again.
This unusual dietary shift began two years ago. Ravindran, who owned a shop, would regularly give Suprabha fruits and vegetables. This new diet seemed to appeal to her, and she gradually stopped consuming her regular feed. Following her last calving, Suprabha’s primary diet now consists of fruits, vegetables, and bakery sweets. Her fondness for sweets is such that she must have at least some jaggery in her breakfast. This significant change in her eating habits is notable, as it deviates from the typical diet of a cow, indicating Suprabha’s unique preferences and the special care she receives from her caregivers. Although Suprabha’s diet is unusual, it is amazing that this 37-year-old cow is still living a healthy life.
