CHENNAI: The Kerala Police on Monday arrested the captain of MV Prabhu Daya, allegedly involved in an accident off Kerala coast leading to the death of five fishermen, after the Madras High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. However, the police team, led by Ernakulam range IG K Padmakumar, was unable to take Gordon Charles Pereira (48) to Kerala as the Chennai Port Trust raised objections.“The port has raised objections because there is no master in the ship to attend to if something happens. Till the shipping company assigns another master, he will be in the ship,” said Padmakumar.Sources said Kerala Police was guarding Pereira in the ship, which is anchored off the Chennai Port. “His arrest has been officially recorded by the evening... The port officials are of the view that he can be brought out of the vessel only after alternative arrangements are in place,” Padmakumar said.Kerala Police has registered two cases against Pereira. Apart from being an accused in the accident that killed the fishermen on March 1, he is named in an attempt to murder case. K E Sugathan, father of ship’s second officer Prashobh, had filed a compliant that his son was thrown off the ship near Trincomalee. Ship officials claimed he attempted suicide.
