THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An attempt by a middle-aged man to immolate himself in the chamber of KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala at Indira Bhavan here on Tuesday afternoon was foiled by the people present in the office. B Mohandas, 55, residing near Aakkulam Boat Club, caught everyone unawares as he doused himself with kerosene and tried to torch it with a cigar lighter, while keeping all at bay for sometime by placing a wire cutter on his neck and persisting on a single demand. He was in an inebriated state. He was overpowered by those assembled after sometime and handed over to the police. The incident occurred around 1.45 p.m., when Ramesh was about to leave for lunch after attending office and meeting scores of visitors. When the turn of Mohandas came, he demanded that Ramesh should intervene to find out the real culprit involved in two cases in which he has been falsely implicated and which is pending in the court since 2008. His grouse was that a local thug residing near his house had cooked up the cases by inflicting damages to his own dwelling. In the second stage, the thug blew up the same residence and foisted the case on Mohandas, it is alleged. “The Sreekariyam police had done injustice to me and my family without nabbing the real culprit,” he kept on saying. The stoutly-built Mohandas is a plumber by profession and had been working in Kuwait since 1979. He used to come home once in 3-4 months. This time, he had decided to end his life in front of the KPCC chief, if justice is not forthcoming. “I was in jail for 14 days after the cases were slapped on me. I have done nothing wrong,” he said. Why pleading in front of the KPCC chief alone on this issue? He believes that it was Ramesh who had helped the local thug to plant cases against him. He was reportedly keeping the kerosene bottle in his trousers for the past 15 days and waiting for an opportunity to strike. An embarrassed Ramesh said that the person had approached him many times on the issue. “I’ve entrusted the local Congress leadership to sort out the issue,” he said and added that the incident was indeed an eye-opener. “Just think about the situation if something really untoward had happened,” he sighed. The Museum police had registered a case of trespass and attempt to commit suicide against Mohandas.
