A 40-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his mother due to a property dispute, here on Tuesday.

Virudhunagar native Gopinath moved in with his sister Bharathi and mother Bhagyalakshmi (65) into a house at Kamarajar Nagar,  Nungambakkam last week, police said. Gopinath then took up a job in the suburbs. However, he also started pestering his mother to give him an extra share of money  from the amount raised through the sale of property belonging to his father Jeyaram in Virudhunagar.

On Sunday evening, Bharathi found her mother lying in a pool of blood and the gold jewels she was wearing missing. She suspected the involvement of her brother, who went absconding soon after, in the murder. Based on a complaint by her, police arrested Gopinath, who later confessed to the murder. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
