CHENNAI: In a breakthrough within 24 hours of receiving a complaint of theft of 85 sovereigns of gold jewellery, the police arrested a man and recovered the stolen valuables at Nungambakkam on Tuesday. The complainant, Thamizhmaran (40), a resident of Tata Communication Colony, had stated that he had locked the jewellery in a safe after returning from Madurai on July 27. He left the city two days later, while his wife Banurekha returned from Madurai on July 31.Thamizhmaran, who came back on Monday, found the jewels missing from the safe. He lodged a complaint with the Nungambakkam police the same evening.Since the lock had been intact and the complainant had the habit of depositing the house keys with the security guards, the police suspected the involvement of known persons in the theft. Thamizhmaran also told them that he had lost a house key recently. After questioning several local people, the cops zeroed in on M Rajan (24) and questioned him.Rajan reportedly confessed that he had found the lost key and stolen the jewels when the couple was away.
