MAMI Review: Aftershock (Tangshan Dadizhen)
Directed by Feng Xianogang, the film is an absolute tear-jerker and a delight to watch

Mumbai: This brilliant Chinese film tells the story of twins who get separated after an earthquake.

Set in the backdrop of the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, Aftershock deals with the emotions of a five year old girl who realises that when her mother is given a choice between saving her and her brother, Fang Da, chooses her brother over her.

Left for dead, Fang deng, survives and is adopted by a kind couple. Fang Deng finds it hard to forgive her mother even after 30 years and even after she herself becomes the mother of a girl.

The director, Feng Xianogang keeps the audience hooked since the beginning of this emotional drama and the scenes involving earthquakes are very convincing. Some scenes are very sensitively handled like the one where Fang Deng’s adopted mother feels insecure about her going back in search of her birth mother or when the twins’ mother is telling her dead family members the directions to her new house.

An absolute tear-jerker, its a delight to watch.
