Kuala Lumpur: In a gruesome incident, a jobless man has chopped off his Indian-origin wife's hand and feet with a meat cleaver on suspicion of having an extra-marital affair before committing suicide in southern Malaysia.
K Menaga, 44-year-old mother of three, is fighting for her life in the intensive care unit in a hospital in Johor. After committing the barbaric act, the 47-year-old unemployed man drank poison and hanged himself, The Star newspaper reported.
Jealousy is believed to be the main reason for the brutal assault, police said.
A neighbour, who declined to be identified, claimed that the victim, had been working as a dishwasher at a hotel in Singapore and stayed at the republic for the past 15 years.
The neighbour said the victim was the family's sole breadwinner as her husband was jobless, the report said.
"She only comes back once a month to see their three children and her mother-in-law, who has been taking care of their children, and also to give money to them. Every time she comes back, they will always quarrel because the husband accused her of having an affair with a man who sometimes sent her home from Singapore," the neighbour said.
The victim's brother K Ravichantaran was quoted as saying by the newspaper that her sister was currently unconscious at the intensive care unit of an hospital.
During the time of the incident, Menaga's two older children were out working while the youngest was staying with his father and grandmother at their double-storey house, the report said.
Menaga returned home around 11 AM on Thursday when she was confronted by the deranged husband, who accused her of having an affair with another man in Singapore, it added.
This led to a heated argument when the husband took a meat cleaver and attacked the victim by chopping off her wrists and feet. The husband then ran to the second floor and locked the door behind him where he drank poison before hanging himself at the balcony of the house.
