BANGALORE: Celebrating Makara Sankranti becomes affordable this year. A family of six members can  bring in the festival with as less as Rs 350. The Rajarajeshwarinagar Sports and Cultural Association along with councillor G H Ramachandra, will organise four-day long Sankranti Santhe to create awareness about the festival from January 15.According to Rajarashwarinagar councillor, who is also the convener of the event, this is first-of-its-kind initiative in the city.  The Santhe introduces people to forgotten or unfamiliar grains like Sajje(Pearl millet), Navane (Foxtail millet) and many such rare grains.Farmers and vendors across the state will be participating in the event. Twenty types of rice, 10 varieties of jaggery, sugarcane and other attractions of the festival will be on sale. There will be nine stalls, each having at least 12 different commodities on  display. “Also, organic vegetables will be sold at reasonable prices,” the councillor said.SANKRANTI BUTTISankranti butti, or Sankranthi basket, will be sold at `350. The basket contains rice, jaggery, sesame, acchu and other products that can serve a family of six to eight members, he said.DIFFERENT START AND ENDRamachandra explained that on January 12, rice and jaggery will be fed to cow as a part of our culture. “On January 15, on day of the festival, a decorated bullock will run over the fire which is a ritual in Karnataka.”
