CHENNAI: Differently-abled persons in the State have expressed their reservations over the e-ticket booking facility for State Transport Corporation buses. The facility, said to be the first of its kind in the country, was launched by Chief Minister J Jayalallithaa on Monday. However, as Simmachandran, general secretary of Tamil Nadu Federation of Physically Handicapped Association, put it, “This is a welcome move. After a long struggle, the Transport Department on November 27, 2006 brought out a GO that ensured computer reservation of seat numbers 11 and 12 for the differently-abled and the elderly. But, in the e-booking facility, no such provisions have been made. Barring seat numbers 9 and 10, which are reserved for the VIPs, all other seats in the buses are open to e-booking for everybody.” He urged the government to make the necessary changes so that the differently-abled would be able to make their Diwali travel plans. Since the differently-abled, along with a person accompanying them, are entitled to a one fourth concession in the fare for all the STC’s Express buses, changes should be made to enable them to book tickets using their National ID card numbers, to avail of this concession. The TN Federation of Physically Handicapped Association and TamilNadu Association for the Rights of all types of Differently-abled and Care Givers (TARATDAC) have sent a representation to the CM in this regard.
