CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu will be providing free laptops to about 9.5 lakh students before March 2012 and the State government has already distributed 5,000 laptops across the state, according to Information Technology secretary Dr Santosh Babu. Speaking on the sidelines of a forum on e-governance organised by the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce here on Monday, he said the State was also planning to have 106 maintenance centers for laptops.These would be maintained by the suppliers and will have a warranty period of two to three years, he said. Dr Santosh Babu said the distribution of laptops would bridge the digital divide and create students who are e-savvy. The government was also framing a hardware manufacturing policy to manufacture laptops, and discussions are on with private players, he said. He also said Rs 180 crore Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems would be on track next year. The project was aimed at nation-wide integration of crime through adequate networking.
