Varanasi: Terming Pramod Mahajan's death as an irreparable loss to BJP, former Union miniter Swami Chinmayanand on Thursday said the tech-savy party general secretary had played an integral role in the 2003 Assam peace process.
Interacting with newspersons, Chinmayanand said in 2003, when he was looking after the Northeast matters in home ministry, the Assam peace process involving Bodo extremists was stalled owing to the 'non-cooperation' of the Congress government in the state.
"It was Mahajan who rescued the peace process by pursuing Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to concur with the peace formula of the NDA government, following which the Bodo extremists agreed to shed their armed struggle," he claimed.
Describing Mahajan as a leading light of coalition politics in the country, the former BJP MP from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, who has now sided with expelled party leader Uma Bharti, said it was Mahajan's expertise in smoothly running a coalition that helped the NDA government at the Centre overcome many a jitter.
Agreeeing he had some differences with Mahajan, for changing the BJP's style of functioning, Chinmayanand said Mahajan had elavated the nationalistic ideology of the RSS in an innovative manner.
Terming Mahajan as a moderate leader, the former union minister
said his absence will always be felt in multi-party politics in the
country. "BJP will take years to offset his loss," he said.
