CHENNAI: DMK south zone organising secretary M K Alagiri skipped the party’s executive committee meeting here to discuss the Mullaiperiyar issue on Friday.Party chief M Karunanidhi tried to play down his son’s absence saying that the Union Minister was in New Delhi to take part in Parliament session. “Alagiri is a Union Minister and that is why he could not come even today. He has the important responsibility of answering questions which come up in Parliament relating to his department,” Karunanidhi said.Interestingly, Union Ministers Jegathratchagan and Palanimanickam attended the party meeting.Alagiri’s name was also missing in the list of leaders leading the human chain protests the DMK is planning in five districts on December 12. For this too, Karunanidhi’s explanation was that his elder son has to answer the “call of duty in Delhi”.The meeting was chaired by Karunanidhi and attended by party treasurer M K Stalin, general secretary K Anbalagan, headquarters secretary Arcot N Veerasamy, deputy general secretaries Durai Murugan, V P Duraisamy and Sarguna Pandian. Alagiri’s men, Madurai urban district secretary G Thalapathi, rural district secretary P Moorthy, former district secretary Veluchamy, former Mayor Kulandaivelu and former Deputy Mayor PM Mannan were among those in attendance.
