CHENNAI: The Madras High Court is a leader in many aspects, claimed Justice Altamas Kabir, the senior most judge of the Supreme Court, on Saturday.Inaugurating the 150th year celebrations of the High Court here, Justice Kabir said that the introduction of holiday courts for matrimonial cases was a unique initiative.“We have come to a situation where arrears of cases are going up and people expressed their anger. The same will also affect their faith in the judiciary,’’ he said and suggested deployment of an alternative disputes redressal system.A mega lok adalat was held in Madhya Pradesh three or four months ago and as many as 6.7 lakh cases were settled on one day. In another lok adalat over 12.5 lakh cases were settled in a day.He said that because of the judiciary, the rule of law was preserved. Without rule of law, the very concept of democracy would fail. Seeking the assistance of the lawyers in this connection, he said that the judiciary consisted of judges and lawyers. “We are part of one family. We are two sides of a coin. One cannot exist without the other,’’ he said.In his key-note address, Justice P Sathasivam, sitting judge of the Supreme Court, said that the Madras High Court was the first in many respects. It was the first High Court whose judges declared their assets on the official website. It consisted of a wider cross-section of society compared with many other High Courts in India. It also topped in the rate of disposal of cases in India and the record created by it was unassailable. The functioning of the mediation centre and its efficiency had been recognised across the country.If one was to go through the annual report 2010-11, one would agree that it was this court which was a pioneer in all aspects, he said and appealed to the advocates and judges to be conversant with modern technology to cope up with present day requirement.
