BANGALORE: It was a chance for around 150 visually and physically challenged students of the city to get together and have fun as Sahana Charitable Trust organised a day-long celebration to mark the 203rd birth anniversary of Louis braille in the city on Sunday. The day began by paying tributes to Louis Braille, who as a result of an accident was blinded and went on to invent a language which was adopted by people worldwide to enable visually challenged people to read.Students then went on to take part in a braille writing competition. “I am very excited to be here. There are so many people here like me who cannot see,” said Manjunath, a fifth standard student. The day also had a braille reading competition for college students.“We have something for everyone. There is a singing competition for those with orthopaedic disabilities. There will also be a fancy dress competition for mentally challenged students later in the day,” said Lakshmi, managing trustee of the foundation. Into its 10th year, the trust focuses on converting college and school texts into braille for the benefit of visually challenged students. “This year we converted 40,000 pages. Our trust was started by five visually challenged persons and that is the reason we know the importance of braille,”said Lakshmi.
