CHENNAI: The Southern India Regional Council of The Institute of Charted Accountants of India conferred the Lifetime Achievement award on V Shanta, Chairperson of the Cancer Institute, for her contribution to the field of oncology. Accepting the award at the Women CAs Conference held here on Saturday, she said that the country was in urgent need of a cancer policy to counter the disease, which was now growing into a major threat. Along with a policy, a nation-wide campaign against the use of tobacco was important, she said. As a member of the State Planning Commission, she said she had pointed to CM J Jayalalithaa the need for a comprehensive cancer policy and was hopeful that it would be formulated in the next plan period. Chief Financial Officer of PepsiCo India Holdings, Kimsuka Narasimhan, said that women looking to be successful in their careers must find a good role model who could guide them. Investment in skills was also a key element in professional success, she added.Mallika Srinivasan, Chairman of TAFE, said that charted accountants were now expected to go beyond just auditing and should be able to provide solid suggestions that would enable improvement of processes and systems in an organisation. They must also keep the larger picture and the tradition of the institution in mind while providing such suggestions, according to her.
