KOCHI: The Congress in Kerala is all set for a complete revamp amid hurdles to the exercise. KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy are holding discussions with the party high command for the reconstitution of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) and the District Congress Committees (DCCs).Even when Chennithala is all geared up to reconstitute the committees in a couple of weeks, a bunch of senior leaders think there could be many hurdles on the way. “We have initiated proceedings in this regard. However, a decision would be taken after holding discussions with the AICC,” said Ramesh Chennithala. However, KPCC general secretary Joseph Vazhakkan feels the revamp will not be that easy. “There could be many obstacles while reconstituting the existing system. But, everything would be sorted out soon,” he said. Senior leader V D Satheeshan is of the opinion that a consensus could be reached regarding various committees.Though the reconstitution has been on the cards for quite some time, it was held back as AICC president Sonia Gandhi was away for treatment. It is learnt that a consensus has been reached for the posts of DCC presidents. Sources said around eight DCCs are likely to get new presidents. As part of the ‘one-man one-post’ policy of the party, several MLAs and ministers would have to relinquish their position in the KPCC and the DCC. The Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam district committees would be getting new presidents as V S Sivakumar and K C Joseph are ministers. Therambil Ramakrishnan, who is an MLA, would have to relinquish the post of president of the Thrissur district committee. Idukki DCC would also get a new president as P T Thomas is a member of Parliament.Joseph Vazhakkan, Benny Behnan and Peethambara Kurup are some of the leaders who would have to quit from their KPCC posts. The presidents of Kannur, Kollam, Kozhikode and Alappuzha DCCs are likely to be replaced owing to poor performance and factional feuds, sources said. Though the party has adopted the ‘one-man one-post’ policy, the leaders are doubtful if a consensus could be reached. The Congress leadership is holding discussions with Union Ministers A K Antony, Vayalar Ravi and also the AICC general secretary in-charge of Kerala Madhusudan Mistry.
